OEDIPUS TYRANNUS
A
SATIRICAL OPERA

From the team that brought you the Passioun o Sanct Andraa. A monstrously fat tyrant - played by Ian Brooks, making a rare guest appearance as a man "''finds himself in terrible difficulties with his starving subjects. But his wicked ministers devise a fiendishly clever plot to put an end to his problems once and for all. Their schemes include a trio of dancing, singing insects and other oddities, but their secret weapon is a Green Bag (no not an ecologically-minded lady :MEP!) Will thisĀ· dastardly plot succeed or will the downfrodden poor be liberated by the magical Queen Iona? Must Oedipus the Tyrant and his army of red-coated monkeys continue to rule the pigsty?
David Bullock has written a plethora of memorable tunes for this two-act romp. If you like Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven - to say nothing of folksongs and Negro spirituals - and plenty of gags, then this is for you and for children who can stay up until 10 p.m. - Oedipus lasts under two hours.

The show is directed by Jamie Reid Baxter; the text is by one of the greatest of English writers, the poet Shelley. But because it was so far ahead of its time in 1820 when it was penned Oedipus Tyrannus has had to wait 162 years to reach the stage. Jamie has-been trying to get it staged since 1974. Now, with a cracking team from Pirate Productions a.s.b.l. he has finally succeeded.

Pirates choruses have done all kinds of funny things on stage over the years; but you've never before seen them all crawling around, not merely living like pigs but actually looking like pigs. Yes, George Orwell, of Animal Farm fame, must have read Shelley's play, where the downtrodden, exploited population of George IV's police-state England are, literally, reduced to being swine. The real swine, of course, is the great fat pig on the throne ...
But let's not give the ending away. What a pity Orwell never saw this opera performed - you can - the world premiere performance is on Thursday 26th March, with a second performance on Friday 27th. Both start, please note, at 8 p.m. in the Theatre Municipal in Esch Alzette - Luxembourg's best theatrical venue. Maestro Bullock conducts.
